Carson Kievman Select Discography Neither the music nor the career of Carson Kievman have found their way into easy categories. A Californian who has lived in New York, Europe and South Florida, Kievman has followed an independent -- and at times controversial -- course that has blended New Music with the theatrical, visual and literary arts. His music has been performed internationally in opera, concert, dance and museum settings, from the Berkeley Art Museum in 1975 to the Pennsylvania Ballet in 1983 to a retrospective at the Mannheim National Theater in 1995. Kievman's major commissions include Joseph Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival (1987-91 and 1978-79), the Tanglewood Music Festival (1977-78), the Donaueschingen Festival/Sudwestfunk (1982-84), and the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra (1990-91). He has been sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Florida Commission of Cultural Affairs, and private institutions such as the Rockefeller, Fromm, Hooker and Adolph Foundations. The recipient of awards from BMI, I.S.C.M. and various international festivals, several of Kievman's large-scale operatic and orchestral works have not yet been performed in full. Born in 1949, Kievman received his MFA in 1977 at California Institute of the Arts. He has held fellowships at Tanglewood, the MacDowell Colony, the Eugene O'Neil Music Theater, and Darmstadt, Germany, and has lectured at Darmstadt and at universities in South Florida and New York. His musical mentors have included Earle Brown, Olivier Messiaen and James Tenney. Carson Kievman's website is located at http://silvertone.princeton.edu/~carson/.
